In the Fall of 1999, the Chicano/Latino staff and faculty supported the idea that UCLA should host a celebration to honor the legacy of César E. Chávez. The celebration, it was thought, would serve to bring together the UCLA community as well as their friends and the community at large to remember a respected Chicano leader.
The effort gave birth to the UCLA César E. Chávez Spirit Award, an event to present the award, and the development of student support and scholarships. The presentation of the award has become an annual event that recognizes individuals who have, through their actions and connection to the Chicano/Latino community, endeavored to follow the ideals that guided Chávez' struggle. These ideals can best be found in Chávez' own Prayer for the Farmworker Struggle:
Show me the suffering of the most miserable; so I will know my people's plight.
Free me to pray for others; for you are in every person.
Help to take responsibility for my own life; so that I can be free at last.
Give me honesty and patience; so that I can work with other workers.
Bring forth song and celebration; so that the Spirit will live among us.
Let the Spirit flourish and grow; so that we will never tire of the struggle.
Let us remember those who have died for justice; for they have given us life.
Help us love those who hate us; so we can change the world.
Amen.
We, who have worked for this event dedicated to remember
Chávez' legacy, hope that you will be able to join
us to celebrate this years' recipient.
